Southwest Jack Russell Terrier Network Celebrates 20th Anniversary with JRTCA
Founded in 1988, we are the oldest affiliate of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America.
Our founding members are Mary Killion Goldberg, Catherine Smith, Jerry Barr, Florence Clark, Carol Johnson (Frierson), Rod Johnson and Joan Yuill. In the early days the SWJRTN hosted the JRTCA Regional trial in 1996 and with great success our club hosted again in 1998.
We celebrated our 20th anniversary on November 1, 2008 after Saturday’s trial, with a dinner and reflection on our clubs history.
History of our club:
The first trial was held at Mary’s home with Mrs. Terri Batzer was the conformation judge.

Fond Memories of the Southwest Jack Russell Terrier Network
Submitted by Mary Killion Goldberg:
Mary started the SWJRTN in her back yard. She was the host of many of the first playdays.
Submitted by Joyce Cox:
Joyce was the National director for two separate terms, once in 1996-1998 and then again in 1999-2001 and she also was the Affiliate Coordinator from 2001-2003. Joyce Cox was elected the first Vice President to the Jack Russell Research Foundation. Some of Joyce’s memories are of a trial in which Carolyn Capps and her Jack, Dottie, participating in the costume contests. Dottie would proudly display her outfits of Madonna, Jackrassic Park and even a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. Lynn Measles’s, Rootie Tootie, was also a crowd pleasure dressed as a prisoner and strutting to Jail House Rock. Joyce recently has been quoted as saying, “I can’t think of any other breed of dog I would rather have after having a Jack Russell.”
Submitted by Mitzi Day:
Lloyd Cox (1937-2001) was an active member of the SWJRTN, hosting many fun days at his home is Josephine Texas. He loved the Jack Russell for all the gumption they had and especially liked to compete in Conformation and Racing with them. His wife Shirley Cox was also active and served as President on the SWJRTN BOD.
Submitted by Dorothy Stairs:
The SWJRTN hosted many playdays and trials. Some of my favorites were the trials in Denton and having playdays at Mary’s home in Richmond. We’d have tons of people, members from all over the state. We had a member that trained their terriers to kill snakes and some that had terriers that were in law enforcement.
Another memory was the wonderful raffles we had, there would be so much stuff to be raffled off. It was always fun to work the raffles at our trials.
Submitted by Debbie West:
Being a part of this club has blessed me with so many terrier friends. I’m excited to help with trials and playdays. It’s been hard work but when you see new people getting involved and they go home with happy terriers and you can just tell they have enjoyed themselves too. WOW, what a great feeling that is.
One thing I don’t do enough is hunt with these wonderful dogs. It’s so important that these terriers have a job and Hunting is their job. I don’t have wonderful hunting stories to tell, but I learn something new every time I go out. See you at the next trial or maybe in the field.
